ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the basic principles of milling, traditional methods of milling of rice-home pounding, huller mills, sheller mills, and rubber roll sheller mills and modern rice milling processes. It also presents rice milling machinery-paddy cleaner, stoner, rubber roll sheller, paddy separator, whitening or polishing, bran and polished rice separator, rice grader, and rice mixing. The important components of a modern rice mill are as follows: Therefore, the machinery of a modern rice mill consists of efficient paddy cleaner, rubber roll sheller, paddy separator, cone-type abrasive polishing, bran separator, and grading equipment. Whitening and polishing processes are quite critical, as it is on these processes that the ultimate milling quality of the paddy depends. Whitening and polishing machines are of two types: abrasive type and friction type. The abrasive-type machine consists of two types: cone-type polisher and horizontal-type polisher.
