ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the concepts of cleaning, grading, grade factor and sorting, sorting of fruits and vegetables, and grains. Separators included are spiral separator, indent cylinder separator, cyclone separator, centrifugal separation, Stokes equation and cream separator, color separator, and comprehensive presentation of machine vision for grading fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are sorted on the basis of color, damage, and size. Most of the sorting on the basis of color and damage is done manually, but an electronic eye can be also used. Many fruits and spherical vegetables are graded over vibrating screens. Products are sorted on the basis of roundness or length. An indent cylinder separator used for sorting grains on the basis of roundness or length is showed. The product passes from the inlet housing into the interior of the rotating cylinder, the cover of which is provided with impressed pockets or so-called indents.
