ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the potential health effects of radio frequency radiation (RFR) with a focus on what is required to ensure the human safety, especially from emerging Millimeter wave technologies of next-generation 5G communication systems. 5G and Internet of Things will be impacting economies and revolutionizing entire societies. Epidemiological studies are of primary importance in health risk assessment. There has been a number of epidemiological studies analyzing health effects of Radio frequency exposure. As RF exposure is not considered to be directly carcinogenic, research should be aimed particularly toward its possible promotional and co-promotional effects. Since most RFR exposure from local and environmental sources is of relatively low levels, although measurable, a number of knowledge areas should be enhanced. In addition, experimental and clinical studies of RFR have been examined with a focus on genotoxicity and carcinogenicity, melatonin hypothesis, reproduction, and hypersensitivity. The expert groups suggested a reduction in exposure levels, precautionary approach, and further research.
