Abstract
Sorry, there is no abstract. Read the first few lines of the text instead! Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory skin disease characterized by typically distributed eczematous skin lesions [1]. The majority of AD patients show very high serum levels of total and allergen-specific IgE and activation of peripheral blood T cells and their preferential secretion of type 2 T cell cytokines was repeatedly reported [2, 3, 4, 5]. In AD, the pivotal role of CD45RO+ (memory/effector) T cells expressing the skin homing receptor, the cutaneous lymphocyte-associated antigen (CLA), was demonstrated [6]. CLA+ T cells in AD represent an in vivo activated memory/effector cell subset retaining allergen specificity [3, 4, 5]. Both CD4+ and CD8+ CLA+ T cells express increased surface activation markers, contain and spontaneously release preformed cytokines, mainly IL-5 and IL-13 and to a low extent IL-4 and IFN- in comparison to the CLA- subset [3, 4, 5].
