Late Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is one established risk factor for MS. EBV is a γ-herpesvirus with a population prevalence of > 90% in adults in western countries (Pariente et al., 2007). It infects predominantly B-lymphocytes and persists in rare memory B-cells in the periphery.
