Objective: Although cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been used in the treatment of osteoarthritis with successful results, it has not been widely adopted for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, especially for protrusio acetabuli.
Methods: We reviewed 15 patients with 21 primary cementless THAs with a mean age of 57 years (31 to 60) at the time of surgery. The mean follow-up period was 3 years. All the THAs were done with autologous cancellous bone grafts obtained from the femoral head.
Results: Two patients (2 hips) died before the final follow-up. Of the remaining 19 hips, only one cup was revised for aseptic loosening. Excellent bone remodeling was found in the acetabulum, including 6 cases of previous severe protrusio acetabuli.
Conclusion: Our study indicates the excellent long-term results which can be achieved with cementless THAs in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
