We have great pleasure in welcoming you to the ninth annual International Computing Education Research Conference, ICER 2012, sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group in Computer Science Education (SIGCSE). It is especially exciting to be hosting this conference for the first time in Auckland, New Zealand.
This year's conference continues its tradition of being the premier forum for computing education research, from discussions of preliminary ideas to presentation of contributions to the computing education research discipline.
The call for papers attracted a record 54 submissions. All papers were double-blind peer-reviewed by members of the international program committee. After the reviewing, 13 research papers and eight discussion papers were accepted (38%) for inclusion in the conference. There are also ten lightning talks, and we have authors and presenters from seven countries: Australia, Finland, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The papers span a wide variety of topics, including tools and tool use; conceptions, preconceptions, and misconceptions; attitudes; collaborative learning; research categorization; teacher adaptation to new paradigms; and broad-scale adoption of computing innovations.
The program also includes a keynote address by Jan Meyer of the University of Queensland who will discuss threshold concepts.
We hope that delegates to this conference will not only enjoy the program we have put together but also find the time to explore the beautiful city of Auckland and the wonderful scenery and hospitality of the rest of New Zealand.
