Abstract
Background There has always been a strong commitment at St Christopher’s and throughout palliative care social work to support the education and development of the next generation of social workers. However, the change in course requirements (stipulating final year social work placements are now required to be undertaken in statutory services) has complicated the option to support a social work student on placement in palliative care. In response to this change, St Christopher’s created a role within its Social Work Team for a Newly Qualified Social Worker (NQSW) to undertake their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) within the hospice.
Aims of the poster/workshop
To give a brief general explanation of the ASYE
To explain how ASYE set up at St Christopher’s, with close links into Southwark Social Services and the South London Partnership
To reflect on the positives and challenges of the ASYE in a hospice setting, both for the NQSW, the team and the organisation
To invite participants to consider the potential for employing an NQSW for their ASYE in their work setting.
