Reference ranges for thyroid volumes in newborns of different gestational ages have not been previously determined. We assessed thyroid volume within the first week of life in a sufficient number of neonates of different gestational ages to establish normal ranges for babies born in Turkey. In addition, we evaluated interobserver and intraobserver variations in sonographic measurement of thyroid volume.

The inclusion criteria for our study were1:

  • gestation between 25 and 42 weeks;

  • birth weight between the 10th and 90th percentiles of mean gestational age related birth weight;

  • blood thyroglobulin concentration 2–54 ng/ml.
