Selective complexation of catechols with Fe+3 ions in determining caffeine in tea by high-performance thin-layer chromatography

Abstract

A procedure was developed for determining caffeine by high-performance thin-layer chromatography on PTSKh-AF-V-UF plates with the methanol-ethyl acetate (1: 3) mobile phase and densitometric detection (254 nm). It was shown that the use of the selective complexation of catechols with Fe+3 cations eliminated their interfering effect in the analysis of different samples of black and green tea.
