Abstract

A theory of low-threshold optical nonlinearity in dielectric nanocomposites, which describes features of the nonlinear response of samples in weak laser radiation fields, is proposed for the first time. It is shown that the experimentally observed low-threshold nonlinear response and its unusual character of variation with increasing radiation intensity are related to the photoinduced dipole electric moments of nanoparticles, the dependence of the differential population of states of charge carriers in a nanoparticle on the radiation intensity, and the orientation of nanoparticles along the direction of polarization in the external optical field.
