Abstract

Frost resistance of winter barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars was found related to water retention capacity (hygroscopicity) of mature grain. With an example of 17 cultivars, it was shown that the higher is frost resistance the lower is the volume of supernatant liquid extracted from ground barley grains with a magnesium salt solution. Comparative assessment of frost resistance from the freezing survival of whole plants in refrigerating chambers and from hygroscopicity of mature grain has shown that these two methods produce similar data. At the same time, the proposed new method of assessing frost resistance is considerably simpler and economically more efficient than the method of whole plant freezing.
