Abstract
The purpose of this article is to present a brief review of instruments of international law establishing different legal regimes relating to the shared water resources of the Danube Basin countries, and to try to identify the most important principles relating to contemporary transboundary water management imposed by these legal instruments. Considerable attention is given to the Danubian countries in transition, due to the fact that most of them, striving to join EU, are changing their national systems of water management and their relations with other countries under the influence of broader changes in Europe. The intention of the author is neither to make an exhaustive research into the subject matter, nor to draw certain firm conclusions and propose potential solutions. Instead, the author points out some of the key legal issues relating to transboundary water management in the Danube Basin, while also marking the need for further investigation where appropriate.
