Abstract
Eggs, larvae, pupae as well as imagines of the Mexican bean beetle Epilachna varivestis Mulsant 1864 accumulate alkaloids thought to be involved in the chemical defense of the beetles against predators. 8 different alkaloids were identified by spectroscopic methods. Eggs, larvae and pupae were found to accumulate only pyrrolidine alkaloids. Imagines, for the first 2 days after adult emergence, resembled pupae with regard to the alkaloids present. In older imagines, however, the pyrrolidine alkaloids were gradually replaced by piperidine (homotropane) alkaloids. All of the alkaloids present in E. varivestis are apparently synthesized de novo by the beetles since they are not detected in the food source. The biogenetic origin of the alkaloids, however, as well as possible conversions between the various alkaloids identified remain open.
