Abstract
This paper discusses the impact of state-of-the-art diode laser optical characteristics on the overall performance capabilities of coherent communication systems. In it we explore what the present laboratory device performance represents in terms of system capabilities and what issues remain to be resolved in order to achieve certain goals. The paper deals with the following subjects: ♦Optical performance issues for diode lasers in coherent systems. ♦Reported measurements of key performance parameters. ♦Optical requirements for coherent single channel and (especially) multichannel communications systems. ♦Limitations imposed by diode laser optical performance on multichannel system capabilities. ♦Implications for future developments.
