Abstract
We report FM laser operation in a tunable single-frequency SOA-based fiber ring laser. Phase modulation is applied by means of either an intracavity phase modulator or a direct modulation of the SOA bias current. FM laser operation permits the effective laser linewidth to be adjusted from SLM to over 5 GHz, while controlling the spectral lineshape. A tunable laser having an adjustable linewidth and Gaussian lineshape is an ideal source for telecom optical test and measurement applications.
