Abstract
The dynamics of passively Q-switched, diode-pumped solid-state lasers have been investigated on a rate equation basis. The importance of the absorption cross section of the saturable absorber material was discussed, and the relevant parameters of a passively Q-switched solid- state laser were evaluated. The theoretical calculations were used to optimize a longitudinally diode-pumped Nd:YLF laser which was Q-switched by Cr4+:YAG as a saturable absorber.
