Abstract

A measles patient showed encephalitis like symptoms 4 days after the appearance of eruption and was supected for measles encephalitis.
But HSV was isolated from patient's cerebrospinal fluid 6 days after the appearance of eruption, and a rise in the titer of CF antibody to the virus also was serologically confirmed. The patient, a baby girl, 2 years and 11 months of age, showed a sleeping tendency at the time of admission to our hospital, but she recovered normal consciousness after about 2 weeks.
The virus was isolated by mixed culture with VERO cells and identified as HSV by the direct fluorescent antibody method. It is supposed in this case that HSV, which would have been present in the state of latent infection in ganglion cells. etc., was activated as a results of general stress and a decrease in cellular immunity caused by the attack of measles and meningoencephalitis was manifested.
