Abstract

By a direct analysis of the excited-state part of the nucleon Compton scattering amplitude we establish the expression of all four spin polarizabilities of the nucleon, in terms of its transition moments involving the electric and magnetic dipoles, quadrupoles, and mean-square radii. This is an improvement of the results obtained previously, based on gauge invariance, which gave only the expressions of two of the spin polarizabilities and of the sum of the other two.
