Abstract

We report Raman measurements on c-axis-oriented high-Tc YBa2Cu3O7δ/PrBa2Cu3O7δ superlattices. The assignment of the observed phonon lines is obtained from a comparison of the Raman spectra of these superlattices, bulk YBa2Cu3O7δ and PrBa2Cu3O7δ, and also of an (Y/Pr)Ba2Cu3O7δ mixed crystal. Vibrational peaks were found corresponding to confined phonons as well as extended excitations. We find also a pronounced softening of the B1g-like phonon localized in the Y layers (out-of-plane bending vibration of CuO2-plane oxygen) below the superconducting transition temperature Tc, a property characteristic of YBa2Cu3O7δ superconductors, while phonons localized in PrBa2Cu3O7δ show no such effect.
