Abstract

We present here a detailed study of the surface dynamics of the p(2×1)O-Ag(110) system. The phonon dispersion curves along the 〈001〉 direction were measured using the He-beam-scattering technique. The lattice-dynamical calculations with nearest-neighbor interactions and central forces were performed assuming (a) unreconstructed, (b) missing-row-type reconstructed, and (c) saw-tooth-type reconstructed arrangement of the surface Ag atoms. A comparison of the observed frequencies of the modes along both 〈11¯0〉 and 〈001〉 directions to the calculated values gives strong evidence that the Ag(110) surface undergoes a missing-row-type reconstruction.
