Abstract

Fast-neutron emission from the giant quadrupole resonance in Sn119 was studied for the first time by measuring the deexciting neutrons in coincidence with the inelastic α from the reaction Sn119(α, α). The neutron time-of-flight spectrum shows both the slow evaporation component corresponding to the spreading process and the fast component corresponding to the direct escape leading to single-hole states in the residual nucleus Sn118.
