In the framework of the distorted-wave Born approximation, a generator-coordinate formalism is used for optical waves. This results in a microscopic prescription for the calculation of transfer reaction form factors. A preliminary analysis of the reaction ${}_{}{}^{54}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Fe}$(${}_{}{}^{16}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{O}$, ${}_{}{}^{12}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{C}$)${}_{}{}^{58}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Ni}$ gives a reasonable fit to the angular distribution.
