Abstract

Oxygen 1s near-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction investigations on La1xSr1+xMnO4 (0x0.5) single crystals evidence a doping- and temperature-dependent redistribution of eg electrons between d3z2r2, dx2y2, and d3x2r2d3y2r2 orbitals: For undoped LaSrMnO4 the eg electrons predominantly reside on d3z2r2 orbitals, nevertheless a small amount of charge carriers is found on in-plane dx2y2 orbitals. These in-plane electrons are gradually transferred to the d3z2r2 states upon cooling. Sr doping, however, does not only provide holes to the system but also induces a continuous transfer of electrons from d3z2r2 to d3x2r2d3y2r2 orbitals and, finally long-range charge-exchange-type orbital ordering develops for La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 below T225K. The data indicate a short-range orbital ordering for the intermediate doping range.
