Abstract

We investigate theoretically the influence of a small metallic scatterer on the high-Q whispering-gallery modes of a microsphere resonator. Our results provide a quantitative analysis of the effects of the near-field tip-microsphere interaction on the scattered field. This kind of interaction can be used to control the coupling of these modes with embedded or surrounding media.
