Abstract

The Doppler-shift attenuation method was used to obtain the following information concerning the mean lives of the low-lying states in Si29: τ(1.27MeV)=(3.70.5+0.6)×1013 sec, τ(2.03MeV)=(3.70.6+0.7)×1013 sec, τ(2.43MeV)4.6×1014 sec, τ(3.07MeV)7.4×1014 sec, τ(3.62MeV)=(4.81.5+3.0)×1012 sec, τ(4.08MeV)=(7±2)×1014 sec, τ(4.84MeV)1.3×1014 sec. The results of a series of measurements to test the calculation of the unattenuated Doppler shift are reported. Some information concerning the branching ratios of the states at 4.84, 4.89, and 4.93 MeV in Si29 is also presented. A value of 72+ is suggested for the spin and parity of the 4.08-MeV state. Some of the results are compared to a simple pure-rotational-model interpretation of Si29.
