  2. Research Institute (NHGRI) hosted a landmark series of planning meetings from 2001 to 2003 involving more than 600 U.S. and foreign scientists representing government, industry, and academia. Ideas gathered from these and other scientific leaders were used by NHGRI to develop a bold vision for genomics research, which employs the visual metaphor of a three-story building resting firmly upon the foundation of the Human Genome Project (Collins et al. 2003). In this blueprint for the future, the first floor represents Genomics to Biology; the second floor, Genomics to Health; and the third floor, Genomics to Society (Fig. 1). The door of this metaphorical structure has been deliberately left open, providing free and easy access to any researcher seeking genomic data, or wishing to enter and work on any of the floors.
