Abstract

SUMMARY

A procedure is described for measuring the viabilities (% viable/total organisms) of populations of by short-term incubation on agar films followed by differential counting under the microscope. The only special apparatus needed is a supply of metal annuli. The procedure estimates viability with 95 % fiducial limits of ± 9 %; it appears applicable to other aerobic bacteria, to yeasts and to spore suspensions.
