STRATEGIC PLANNING INITIATIVE

STAFF UPDATE

To increase ABPN effectiveness, Thomas A.M. Kramer, M.D., was promoted from Senior Vice President to Deputy Executive Vice President. He is now responsible for both the strategic planning and day-to-day functioning of the ABPN.

Task Force on Structure and Governance

In 2001, the Task Force on Structure and Governance recommended the establishment of committees on core competencies and on maintenance of certification. Both committees will first meet early in 2002.

Test committees for the subspecialties were restructured. For each subspecialty, a steering committee was named. In most cases, a written examination committee and a recertification written examination committee will report to the steering committee. Depending on the particular specialty or

Rescheduling of the September 2001 Part II Examination

The ABPN Part II Examination scheduled to be held in Denver September 14–16, 2001, was canceled due to the events of September 11. The examination was rescheduled and held December 7–9, 2001, in Denver at the original host hotel. The ABPN is grateful to all those, including the patients, who so willingly agreed to this rescheduling.

Psychiatry, Neurology, and Child Neurology

The Part I examination for Psychiatry, Neurology, and Child Neurology was held November 7, 2001, at 54 sites in the 48 contiguous states; Alaska; Hawaii; Ottawa, Canada; and Puerto Rico. The next examination will be administered at multiple sites on November 6, 2002. The registration deadline for that examination is March 1, 2002.

The format for the Part II Neurology examination was changed in 2001. Additional vignettes were added to the examination to permit candidates to demonstrate their

ABPN Computer Test Center

Completed in December 2000, the ABPN Computer Test Center officially opened with the first computer-delivered ABPN examination on April 3, 2001. The examination was given simultaneously at ABPN in Deerfield, at the American Board of Pathology in Tampa, and at the American Board of Radiology in Tucson. In total, 190 candidates were tested that day. There were no significant problems at any of the sites. Other computer-delivered examinations were successfully given after the initial examination.
