Abstract
The magnetic moments of the nucleon octet are computed in a chiral symmetric potential model of independent quarks. The effective potential, representing phenomenologically the confining interaction due to the non-perturbative multi-gluon mechanism, is chosen in the form U(r)=(1/2a2r+ gamma 0(1/2a2r+V0)), a>0. The residual interaction due to quark-pion coupling arising out of the chiral symmetry preservation is treated as low-order perturbation. The centre-of-mass correction is also taken into account appropriately. The results are in reasonable agreement with experiment.
