Abstract

The optical magnification of a Sucksmith ring balance has been doubled by replacing the usual fixed lens by a concave mirror, which, in conjunction with the two plane mirrors, forms a double pass system.

A cryostat has been designed for the balance which requires only a 16 mm magnet gap, and can be operated continuously over the temperature range 85°K to above 650°K.
