Abstract

In transmission measurements on plane-parallel specimens, light might be lost by absorption or scattering. A method is described in which measurements are made with the same plane-parallel specimen in an integrating sphere. Comparison of the two sets of results allows a quantitative distinction to be made between absorption and scattering. The method is illustrated by some measurements on quartz and diamond.
