Abstract

The shift in frequency of electromagnetic radiation as it passes through a difference in gravitational potential has been measured by use of the Mössbauer effect in 57Fe. The result is 0.859 ± 0.085 times the value predicted by Einstein's theory of relativity, the error being a standard deviation. The discrepancy is most likely due to chance since the probability of obtaining a deviation of at least this magnitude is 10%.
