Abstract
There are a number of well known reasons for believing that the Poynting vector does not give the rate of flow of electromagnetic energy at a point. These are critically discussed. An alternative expression for this rate of flow has been sought by considering a distribution of charges all moving with the same velocity, and insisting that the energy flow should have this velocity. No alternative has been found which satisfies this requirement, and also gives the correct result for radiation from an oscillating electric dipole.
