For physicists who are aware of the interest and controversy aroused by catastrophe theory and want to find out about it, from scratch, this splendid book is the one to read. The authors see catastrophe theory as an important extension of the calculus, or a development within it, rather than (as it is sometimes claimed to be) a departure like Newton's from previous descriptions of the world.
