This special section contains the Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Atomic and Molecular Data and Their Applications (ICAMDATA 2014) held at the Friedrich-Schiller-University in Jena, Germany, 21–25 September 2014. ICAMDATA 2014 is continuing a biannual series of international conferences to promote the use of atomic and molecular data in various fields of science and technology, and provides a forum for the interaction of data producers, database designers and compilers, and data users. The conference series addresses the following topics:

  • i.
Applications of and needs for atomic and molecular data: astrophysics and atmospheric physics, magnetic and inertial fusion, laboratory and industrial plasmas, lighting science and technology, biomedicine and biophysics, combustion and environmental sciences and technology, surface physics, gaseous electronics, solid state spectroscopy, optoelectronics, etc,
  • ii.
Atomic and molecular data collections, assessment and dissemination: data collection and selection, critical evaluation, estimates of uncertainties, databases, data exchange and dissemination, data center activities, standardization of data formats,
  • iii.
Experimental and theoretical atomic and molecular data generation: atomic and molecular structure and spectroscopy, electron collisions with atoms and molecules, heavy particle collisions, particle–surface interactions.

All papers in this special section were subjected to the regular Physica Scripta peer review procedure, and we would like to thank all referees for their work and rapid response.

The conference was held in Lecture Hall 1 of the Abbaenum, a historic building of the University of Jena erected in the world-famous Bauhaus style and named after the well-known physicist Ernst Abbe. On the evening of 21 September, all participants were welcomed warmly at the foyer of this lecture hall. For many colleagues and delegates, this evening offered a hearty re-encounter with each other, along with snacks and beverages. The conference program started with the official opening on the morning of 22 September. It comprised 26 talks (30 min each) that were invited based on recommendations by the International Advisory Board. In addition, 10 special reports (15 min) were selected by the Local Organizing Committee from the submitted abstracts. One session was devoted to the presentation and discussion of atomic and molecular databases, and 60 posters were presented in two afternoon sessions with drinks and food aside. An excursion was organized on the afternoon of 24 September to the nearby town of Weimar, where the Weimar Republic was founded in 1919 and which was the home of the leading characters of Weimar Classicism. The participants enjoyed guided tours through the city center, a world-heritage site, with its many historic buildings and places. Back in Jena, the conference dinner was held at the restaurant 'Zur Noll' where specialities from the local region of Thuringia could be chosen from the menu.

The next conference in this series will be held on 25–29 September 2016 in Gunsan, South Korea, for which we wish the organizers great success. Looking forward seeing you again in 2016.

Acknowledgments

Much of the success of the conference was due to the continuous support of the Advisory Board, the Local Organization Committee and the financial support by our academic sponsors.
