Abstract

A series of techniques is described for the nondestructive preparation of thin films, suitable for transmission electron microscopy, from moisture sensitive materials, such as alkali halide crystals. These techniques eliminate contact with atmospheric or dissolved water during the operations of polishing, washing and transfer to the electron microscope. Additional procedures eliminate the enhanced charging effects in the electron beam experienced with dry crystals. The methods are applicable to similar preparations of other moisture- or atmosphere-sensitive materials provided suitable solvents exist.
