To the editor:
Guenthner and colleagues1 (J Am Acad Dermatol 1999;42:443-8) examined 1011 squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) and found that 983 (97.2%) “contained histopathologic changes consistent with squamous cell carcinoma in situ at the periphery or within the confines of the existing squamous cell carcinoma.” However, they did not obtain additional histologic sections on the 2.8% of the cancers in which they thought they had “inadequate” sampling.
