Abstract
Individuals described as “international” or “foreign-born” faculty have long made significant contributions to American higher education. Since the 1990s, the professoriate has become less dominated by White native-born males, with almost a quarter of faculty in colleges and universities identified as foreign-born. At many institutions, international faculty now constitute a more significant source of diversity than do American-born minorities of color. A study of international faculty interactions in geography departments offers one perspective on the important contributions international faculty members make to diversity on campuses across the United States, and what issues arise for them and their employers as they step into a new academic setting.
