Significance

The Grubbs-type Ru carbene complex anchored on the mesoporous silica material (SBA-15) was prepared and applied to the olefin metathesis reaction. Of the immobilized ligands, the mesoporous silica-supported catalyst 1-SBA-15 was found to give high catalytic activity. The ring-closing metathesis reaction of diallylmalonate took place in the presence of 1-SBA-15 to give cyclopent-3-ene-1,1-dicarboxylic acid diethyl ester in 98% yield. The catalyst 1-SBA-15 was reused five times without any loss of reactivity (see scheme). Under this reaction conditions, no Ru leaching was observed (ICP analysis). Five substrates were examined (82-100% yield).
