A protocol for the efficient coupling of alkynes with aryl and heteroaryl substrates with a Pd/C-CuI-PPh3 catalyst system in aqueous media has been developed. These conditions are tolerant of a variety of unprotected functional groups. Reactions which demonstrate the generality and scope of this methodology are reported.
