The development of a selenoxide - sulfonic acid system for the mild and selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides is reported. Various selenoxide and sulfonic acid combinations were studied in the search for an effective system. A mechanism for the oxidation is proposed and the potential for the development of an asymmetric oxidation system is assessed.
