Dihydroxybipyridyls (dihydroxybipyridines), laser dyes with large Stokes shifts, are prepared by a simple one-step synthesis from the corresponding 2-bromo-3-hydroxypyridines, 3-bromo-4-hydroxyisoquinoline and 2-bromo-3-hydroxyquinoline, using zinc, and nickel(0) in yields up to 45%.
