Benjamin Daniel Shogan, MD, FACS, FASCRS
Ben Shogan, MD, is a staff Colon and Rectal Surgeon and Associate Professor of Surgery at University of Chicago in Chicago, IL. Ben's mother was born and raised in a small town in Germany before moving to the U.S. in her mid-20s, while his father was born and raised on Long Island, NY. Ben was born in Long Island Jewish Hospital in New York and grew up in New Jersey. He attended the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology. From there he attended medical school at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ. He then performed his General Surgery residency at the University of Chicago prior to completing his Colorectal Surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
Clinically, he enjoys all aspects of Colon and Rectal Surgery, but has a particular interest in colorectal malignancy. He is an emerging leader in the realm of investigating the microbiome and his research focuses on understanding how the microenvironment, particularly the microbiome, promotes colorectal cancer recurrence after surgery. Ben is a multitime funded researcher, including serving as the principal investigator on National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Cancer Institute (NCI) grants evaluating the role of the microbiome, malignancy, and infection. He has also published multiple articles in a variety of peer-reviewed journals as well as authoring numerous book chapters along with being very active in colorectal societies.
He and his wife (Dr. Andrea Shogan) have three children (aged 4, 6, and 8) and reside in Hyde Park, Chicago. Away from medicine, he enjoys spending time with his family and used his spare time during coronavirus disease to learn the complexities of construction. In fact, he and Andrea recently finished their basement on their own, through the help of a variety of YouTube videos on framing, insulation, and carpentry. He also is enjoying taking piano lessons.
