Reproductive outcomes in adolescents with previous two abortions in the first trimester of pregnancy

Introduction: The aim of this retrospective study was the investigation of the reproductive outcomes in adolescents with a history of recurrent spontaneous abortions

Material and method: During a seven year period (01 – 01 – 2006 to 31 – 12 – 2012) fifty eight nulliparous adolescents, with a previous history of spontaneous abortion in the first or second trimester, presented to the Family Planning Centre in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Democritus University of Thrace. For the statistical analysis we used the routinely collected perinatal data of our clinic.

Results: There were 58 births among teenagers aged 13 – 19 years. The majority (87.5%) of the adolescents were aged between 16 and 19 years and more than 95% were muslims. All pregnancies were singleton. A large proportion of women (26 women had no obstetric care and 32 women visited inconsequently our centre during their pregnancy Preterm birth < 32 weeks was noted in 26 women, 32 – 34 weeks in 21 women, while only in 11 women the duration of pregnancy was > 34 weeks. Regarding the type of delivery, Caesarean section was performed in 40 of the cases.

Conclusion: According to our results intensive care of pregnant adolescents may reduce the pregnancy complications.
