Abstract

A phtyochemical investigation of Lantana camara L. growing in Egypt was undertaken.

The study of the lipids comprising both the fatty acids and the unsaponifiable matter was carried out revealing the presence of myristic, palmitic, arachidic, oleic and linoleic acids as well as α–amyrin, β–sitosterol and 1–triacontanol.

The carbohydrates, examined by paper and thin layer chromatography, revealed the presence of glucose, maltose, and rhamnose before hydrolysis, glucose and rhamnose after hydrolysis.

The essential oil of the plant was studied. The identification of its chemical constituents was carried out using chemical, T.L.C. and column Chromatographie methods. The presence of α–phellandrene, dipentene, α–terpeneol, geraniol, linalo–ol, cineol, eugenol, citral, furfural and phellandrone was established.
