Study Objective: The objective of our study was to estimate the cost of inpatient interventions for uterine fibroids to payers in Germany, France, and England.

Design: Descriptive analysis of national administrative databases.

Setting: Inpatient stays in Germany, France, and England.

Patients: Women admitted for a surgical or radiological intervention for uterine fibroids.

Interventions: Surgical or radiological interventions for uterine fibroids.

Measurements: We identified the number of hospital admissions involving surgical or radiological interventions for uterine fibroids, through the analysis of a national hospital activity database from each country. We estimated the costs of these hospitalizations to payers in these countries using the Diagnosis-Related Group reimbursement rates.

Main Results: In 2005, the estimated number (rate) of hospital admissions involving inpatient interventions for uterine fibroids was 64,299 (1.52 per 1,000 women) in Germany, 37,787 (1.17 per 1,000 women) in France, and 16,447 (0.71 per 1,000 women) in England. The estimated annual costs of these interventions to payers were €212,212,090 in Germany, €73,278,270 in France (excluding surgeon and anesthetist fees for interventions in the private sector), and €47,407,205 in England. The percentage of interventions for uterine fibroids that included a hysterectomy was 84.9% in Germany, 59.7% in France, and 64.1% in England.
