Objective: To study the sero-prevalence if HIV infection in the pre-pregnancy period in a tertiary care centre in Lagos.

Setting: Prenatal Diagnosis and Therapy Centre of a Tertiary Hospital

Method: The serological records of HIV1 AND HIV2 screening of patients who attended the prepregnancy class at the Prenatal Diagnosis and Therapy centre, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Lagos from 1997 to 2005 were reviewed and analyzed for trends in seroprevalence. The patients sera were screened for antibodies to HIV using enzymes- linked immunoassay (reported

Results: A total n=1,886 patients screened,73 (3.87%) patients were found to have antibodies o HIV. Out of these n=20 patients (%) were males while n=54 (%) were females. The seroprevalence of infection varied between 0% and 9.3% during the study period. The highest was in the year 2004 with 9.39%. The largest number of HIV infected patients. 26.02 (27.39%) respectively occurred in the 26–35 year age group. The total male: female ratio was 20: 54.(12.7).

Conclusion: Our result shows that the prevalence of HIV is increasing in Nigeria and in this group there is need to reduce this high prevalence by targeting an intervention program towards high risk and vulnerable groups in the society. Apart from this patients attending such prepregnancy class should considered this and screen for before and after any procedure.
