Answer to Image 5: Eosinophilic Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis (Churg–Strauss Syndrome)
Painful numbness of the extremities was considered to be caused by mononeuropathy multiplex. Laboratory tests showed hypereosinophilia (white blood cell count, 18,960/μL; eosinophils, 50.3%) and elevated levels of serum immunoglobulin E and C-reactive protein (1347 IU/mL and 37.5 mg/L, respectively). Serologic test for anti-myeloperoxidase antineutrophil cytoplasm antibodies was negative. Colonoscopy revealed no abnormalities except for mild erythema of the rectum. Pathologic examination of the
