A novel scheme facilitating self-seeding reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers as colourless upstream transmitters in a low-cost WDM-PON solution, eliminating centralised broadband sources and active temperature control, is experimentally demonstrated. A single passive broadband filter is used to reflect broadband ASE light from all transmitters for self-seeding. Direct modulation of the incoherent upstream channels shows no significant penalty after 21 km of transmission.
